Mr. Gallon

The Southern heat gave us a little bit of a break today, so we relieved our summer cabin fever by doing some reading outside. While I love the feel of a good paperback book in my hand, I did discover that I could download a free Kindle app for my iPod touch and get many of the living books on our wish list for free or at a discounted rate, so I have to admit I am becoming a digital convert. (I LOVE my ipod touch). I found The Blue Fairy Book and downloaded that for free today - yippee!

While I was reading aloud, the kids colored squares that we divided into quarters, eighths, or sixteenths (if they don't have their hands full of some project while I'm reading they often begin to slowly wander away, either physically or mentally). Then we took the shapes and put them together to make "Mr. Gallon", a project I've been wanting to do since I saw Dana's family do it over at Crazy Maize World.

It's a cute and effective way to teach the measurements for gallons, quarts, pints, and cups. You can see how to make him by clicking on the link at Dana's post (I can't seem to make the link work here).

Afterwards we did one of our favorite summertime activities - "color bowls" - and used it to practice measuring the units we just learned. It's amazing how much fun kids can have with water, bowls, and food coloring (kittens, too).

I left my oldest daughter in charge while I got some chores done inside, but she got bored with the project before the younger girls did and asked if she could come inside. There was a small lapse between when she left and I took over, and this is what happened in the meantime...

Nothing like a little color to brighten your day :). (And it's going to be many "bright days" before all this color washes off). Oh well...

You Capture: Hot

The theme at You Capture this week was "Photographer's Choice". So, as it as been 95 all week here, the theme I picked was "hot". Can't seem to think about anything else...

You know it's hot outside when....

...This is where the CAT hangs out

...This is the only way to pick blackberries

...The hummingbird moths arrive

...The grassy green pastures turn gold and roly

...The only time you can play outside is right before bedtime.

Princess Party part 2

Here's a few more pics from our Princess Protection Program party.

Royal spelling words and "fonts"...

Boy's version of the castle (notice the manly drill and robot dinosaur keeping guard)

castle decorations

this pouty princess did not wish to have her picture taken

but here's the rest of us happily donning our "princess attire" for the movie premiere
(yes, that's the way we did prom dresses in Florida in the '80s, and no, I did not still fit comfortably into mine). The crown template came from here.

even MyBuddy joined in on the fun

and so did Lil' Diva, eventually

By the way, I just saw that Amazon.com is having a 4 for 3 book sale. Just in time to pick up some living books for the new school year. Check it out by clicking the link below:

Princess Protection Program Party Prep

I am rebelling against doing school over the summer with every fiber of my being, but I really want to try to get ahead a little so we can take more time off during the year. So to make the occasional school days I try to sneak in fun and summer-worthy, I'm trying to center them around what the kids are interested in (which shouldn't be such a novel idea). This week the new Disney Channel movie Princess Protection Program airs, so we are having Princess Week to get ready for it (well, Prince and Princess Week, to include my son, too).

To celebrate our first big garden harvest, BeachPea made us cucumber sandwiches, which we ate in our "castle".

CarriBear tries to master the art of the raised pinky...

Then we made castles from an idea we got from here.

We also made some (very un-princess-y) goop to play with today. They looked like they were having so much fun with it over at Crazy Maize World, I couldn't resist making some, too.

We also read through the Princess Handbook based on the movie. It was kinda cute, and nice to hear teen idols talking about dressing modestly, and being graceful and compassionate. Hope, in the next few days before the movie airs, to begin reading The Little Prince, and to make some more princessy stuff like crowns, gowns, and castle decorations. May also try to make a spelling list out of princessy words, with a royal spelling bee at the end. But that depends on how rebellious I'm feeling... :)

We enjoyed playing on this cute princess website, too.

Lovin' Summer part 2

A few more reasons I love summer....

bounty from the garden...

dirty faces...

something to do...

cool things that come out at night...

budding photographers...

staying cool in the shade...

but let's get real here. My favorite thing about summer is staying cool inside in the A/C...

Also, please take a moment to go here and read about the President's hope to ratify the UN Convention of the Rights of the Child. Then follow the link at the bottom of the page to contact your government representatives and urge them to fight to block this ratification. Our voices can only be heard if we speak out loud.

This little girl...

is finally home!

We are sooooo glad to have her back! Her little sisters hardly left her side all day.

BeachPea had some great experiences on her trip - fishing, seeing deer, porcupines, buffalo, baby birds, the Great Lakes, and lots of fun playtime with her cousins and grandparents.

But, yippee!, now she is back home with us again. Life is good.

Also, for those interested, I read that the LCROSS spacecraft will be making a swingby of the moon on Tuesday morning (June 23). You can see live streaming coverage here. Hoping I can remember to check it out. Might be a nice kick-off to our astronomy study this year.
