Summer smiles

My kids have been Toy Story CRAZY since seeing Toy Story 3 a couple of weekends ago (we all loved it, by the way. A must-see if you are a Pixar fan).

s3
This is my baby after discovering she had enough money in her piggy bank to buy her own Woody and Bullseye dolls.

s4
After she got them, the first thing she did was to write her name on their feet, just like Andy.

s5
she was very excited.

But one of my favorite things about summer time,
s1
is that the smiles are just as big when they come from fun that is free :)

s2

If you don't already read her blog, Ann over at Holy Experience has some wonderful thoughts and photos on "how to buy the best summer holidays". Her post has inspired me to pay closer attention to the simple summer joys. And hip hurray! - it's supposed to cool off a little here this week, so maybe we'll get ourselves outside more, and "write our names" on some of summer's "prizes" (without having to crack open the piggy bank :)).

The Joy of PW Cooking: Still going...

Even though I haven't posted pics from it for a while, we are still chuggin' along on our Pioneer Woman cooking project. Yesterday, BeachPea and I had a "date night" (in the middle of the day) and we made these for the family:

f1
yes, they are edible!

Springy Flower Pot Desserts

We had so much fun making these,
and then watching the faces of the family as they contemplated whether or not to trust us when we told them they could eat them :).

especially when they found these:

in the "dirt".

but they eventually came around.

f9
We've also made PW's recipes for chicken strips, perfect pancakes (which I couldn't quite perfect), and fried mozzarella sticks. The chicken and mozzarella sticks were gone before I could even put the plate on the dinner table. Would definitely recommend them!

Hmmm, what should we try next?...

Girls' Week Out, final edition

OK, just a few more pictures from our Girl's Week Out while big brother was at Drum Camp.

a1

Eventually we had to try to find things to do that didn't cost money, since our adventures away from the farm were costing almost as much as Drum Camp.

So we hit many playgrounds.

but eventually the heat drove us in

and we decided to visit a local history museum instead

The next day it was back to a new playground.

and then inside again for a PetSmart visit (anything to be inside!)

b4
I thought this little guy was gorgeous.

b5
(yes, there were pleas for a new kitten, but I was strong)

b8

b9
we finally caved and spent a little on some ice cream.

Couldn't help it. We were hot.

Finally our week on the town came to an end with son's Drum Camp recital...
c1
He did great!
We were very proud.

I had a great week hanging out with my girls, but I have to admit, I'm looking forward to staying home next week, too. Wearing yoga pants, playing with chickens, swimming at the neighbors, staying cool...

Home is good.

Girls' Week Out, part 2

gwo1
As my son continued with his morning drum camp this week, my daughters and I kept busy in town, since it's really too far for us to drive home and back before he finishes.

One small drawback to country life. But I'm not complainin', really.

One day we went to a local park, which has a great playground (but this week it truly was as hot there as that volcano...whew!)

We spent most of our time there hanging out in the shade with the ducks.

gwo9a

gwo2
"Psst. Hey you..."

gwo3
"...yeah, you, with the camera on your face. Got any food?"

gwo4
"Ahem!"
(oh no, it's mom!)

gwo5-1
"What did I tell you about talking to humans?"

gwo6
"sorry mom."

gwo7
"okay human..."

qwo8
"isn't there somewhere else you need to be?"

gwo9b

h1
Whoa. Hello.

gwo9e

gwo9
"Psst. Hey you, got any food?"

gwo9g
"Psst. You there. Got any food?"

h3

h4
"Yuck! Whatever made you guys think we like MOLDY bread, anyway?"

h7
Awww, wittle baby duckies!

h9
I just love it when they go bottoms up.

h2
Speaking of bad hair days,
you just got to click over to Dana's blog and see her amazing picutres there today.

h5
I don't actually know how many pictures of ducks and geese you might want to see,
but I'm betting it might be less than what I'm showing you.

Feel free to scroll down and skip to the end.

h6
I won't mind.

h9b
though the ducks may be a little offended.

h8
but I won't tell them, I promise.

h9a
Aw, but how can you not be dying over those little furry bundles of adorableness?

h9c
I could have watched them all day.

Okay, enough feathers for now.

gwo9i
Back to the playground.

gwo9m
Afterwards we went to the "blue bookstore", which is what my son has always called Books-a-Million (because the letters in their sign were blue). BeachPea made her momma proud and actually looked at some BOOKS.

gwo9n
While certain other folks went over to the bug-eyed lemur aisle.

gwo9o
And stayed there the whole time.

gwo9p
Then we picked up big brother and met Daddy for lunch.

Bug-eyed lemurs and all.
