BeachPea has been wanting to paint her corner of the girls' room for forever.  We finally got around to it this weekend.

She was a little bit excited :)

What's Growing on the Farm...

DSC_0038
The chickens are growing dirtier

DSC_0046
Poor panting chickens have been so hot that they roll around in the dirt whenever they can to cool off (or maybe it's to get chicken bugs off, but they look hot to me, so I'm going with that)

(BeachPea doesn't like dirty chickens)

"Who you calling a dirty chicken?!"

DSC_0083
Our hay is still growing - a miracle considering how little rain we've gotten, until a big storm blew in last night.

Unfortunately, thistles are growing, too.

f2
We've always had a few thistles on the farm, but a few years ago we decided to buy thistle seed for our goldfinches.  And suddenly, thistles started growing everywhere on the farm.

Oops.

Our goldfinches eat sunflower seeds now.

(But I still think thistles are kinda pretty).

This isn't really a picture about farm growth, but I think it's cute so I'm throwing it in anyway.  I guess you could say our usage of the car is growing, now that its usually too hot to walk over to Aunt Jenny's to let her dog out at lunchtime.

BeachPea's excitement over her birthday is growing.  Only 94 more days to go (she likes to be prepared).

DSC_0089
The days are growing longer.  Which means more evening walks.

DSC_0118
Horse bellies are growing, finally getting fat on grass after a long, sparse winter.  (Cow bellies are growing, too, with babies!  Pics coming soon.)

And finally, fruit and flowers are growing (veggies are too, but aren't too exciting to take pictures of, yet)
f3
Daisies, milkweed, petunias, magnolia, peaches (one poor peach tree was blown down by last night's storm, which is sad, but I guess compared to the damage some have gotten from recent storms, I can hardly complain), apples, marigolds, and blueberries

What's growing where you are?

The Final Stretch

DSC_0059
We are finally in our last weeks of homeschooling for the year.

We've moved down to a slightly revised and lighter schedule to help us make it through...

but still, I think we are all getting a little loopy waiting for the end of the year -

and are a little too easily distracted.

So to make things easier to take, we've been sure to include lots of nature studies...

c2
like watching baby mockingbirds learn to fly.

And lots of read-aloud time on the front porch...
c4
...with our animal buddies,

c3
and fun snacks to keep our brains fueled. (Fruit tray by BeachPea).

And of course, a little extra time for "recess".

Life Lately: It's Hot Outside! Edition

I feel like I've been out of sync with the camera lately - just can't capture the shots I want to, so I almost didn't post these pictures. But then I remembered that my blog is about capturing moments I want to share and remember, not about perfect shots, so here they are, a few scenes, good or bad, of life lately on the farm...

(Sidenote: this is in our basement, and it has been cleaned up since this was taken, so imagine the background without all the stuff-noise (you can breathe now, Uncle Tim)).

Disney Channel recently ran a High School Musical marathon.  Butterfly was all over it.  She has been the world's biggest HSM fan since she was one year old.  As soon as the marathon was over on TV, she pulled out all our HSM dvds and watched them again.  We've all been singing the songs in our sleep (we're all in this together...)

Of course, hot weather means the beginning of yummy summer foods, so life is good, even if it's hot.

Is it heating up in your neck of the woods?
